At least, it works if you want to use it as a local DVR, for use when you're watching your home theater. It's extremely simple and direct, but it works. The DVR function is a straightforward, brute-force method at the designated time according to the program guide, the Vulkano manually changes the cable box's channel to the channel with the show you want to record, then captures the footage from it. The base model doesn't include any built-in storage, but you can attach any external USB or eSATA drive, or even an SD card, to record video.
VULKANO PLAYER PC TV
As long as the device is connected to the Internet, the app will find it and log in to either the live TV stream or the associated program guide.Ä«esides place-shifting, the Vulkano serves as a useful DVR.
VULKANO PLAYER PC PASSWORD
Connecting to the Vulkano on any of the players is simple: just enter the Vulkano's name and password that you registered during setup. Fortunately, unlike SlingMedia's software, Monsoon Media offers free Vulkano apps for both desktops (Mac and PC) and mobile devices (iOS, Android, and Blackberry).
Once you get the place-shifting running, you need a remote player to take advantage of it. On the other hand, this means you can configure the Vulkano to work alongside almost any cable or satellite box, with little regard for explicit compatibility. On one hand, this makes configuring the Vulkano to work smoothly with your cable box slightly trickier, and you might have to futz with the IR blaster's timer settings to make it reliably change channels. The Vulkano uses its own electronic program guide for navigation and scheduling. Besides using the IR blaster to issue commands to the box, and using the Vulkano itself to place-shift video from the box, the two devices don't interact at all.

Unlike the Slingbox's optional integration with Dish Network set-top boxes, the Vulkano's interaction with cable boxes is strictly manual. Either way, it's easy to run through the prompts and get the Vulkano configured to access the local network, display the program guide, and control the cable or satellite box with the IR blaster.
VULKANO PLAYER PC SOFTWARE
Users can use the remote to manually enter the necessary settings through an onboard wizard when first starting up, or set it up through a computer, using a Windows-based software wizard that automates the process. The Vulkano offers two main setup choices, both surprisingly simple. Thanks to the IR blaster, it can also indirectly control your cable or satellite box. The included remote lets users navigate through the Vulkano's menus and browse its program guide. The side of the Vulkano holds another USB port, and an SD card slot for even more storage. The back of the box holds most of the inputs and outputs, including component, composite, and S-Video connections for getting video from a cable box, an HDMI output for sending video to the TV, the IR blaster port, USB and eSATA ports for attaching storage for the DVR function, and an Ethernet port for connecting the device to the Internet (though you can also use the Vulkano's built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi). Its slightly curved top makes it impractical to continue stacking, but if you want to spruce up your cable box with its own sombrero, the Vulkano's the strangely-shaped device to do it.
